Tips For Installing Hardwood Pegs

Before installing any hardwood pegs, check the area to make sure they’re not too close to an existing hard surface—like a paving stone or driveway—and for any obstructions, such as rocks or roots. Measure and mark the chosen location with spray paint or flags to ensure you install them in the correct positions.

There are two ways to install hardwood pegs—the first is to dig a small hole for each peg and place them inside. Be sure they’re standing straight before refilling the hole around the soil, pushing down firmly around the peg. Use a level to check the pegs are standing straight. The second method involves hammering each peg into the earth. Again, check the pegs are driven in vertically and not at an angle and be sure to hammer them deep enough that they won’t be knocked over by weather, animals or people.

From there, you can use wire or twine to secure plants to the pegs or put them to use in whichever way you see fit. Store unused pegs in a dry, covered area for longevity.

Common Uses Of Hardwood Pegs

Hardwood pegs have numerous practical applications for your property, but common uses include:

  1. Supporting plants
Hardwood pegs can be used to support tomatoes, cucumbers and other climbing plants. This is especially useful for plants that are tall or have heavy fruit, as the stakes provide additional support to prevent them from falling over.
  2. Marking boundaries
Our pegs can also come in handy for marking the boundaries of a garden, flower bed or other outdoor area by helping to define the space and keep it organised.
  3. As decorative features
While hardwood pegs may not seem like much to look at, they serve as great decorative elements in a garden as they’re easy to paint or carve to add visual interest to a space.
  4. Creating a trellis
Easily create a trellis for climbing plants using hardwood pegs. A trellis provides a structure for the plants to grow on, allowing them to reach new heights and add vertical interest to the garden.
  5. Creating a temporary fence
Hardwood pegs can be used to create a temporary fence or barrier around a project, garden, construction site or hazard. They’re effective for keeping pets and other animals out or for marking off an area that’s off-limits.
  6. Securing timber edging
Use these pegs to secure timber edging for a variety of outdoor areas, such as raised garden beds, sandpits and pet enclosures.

Frequently Asked Questions

This depends on a variety of factors. For example, plastic pegs are highly visible and flexible. They also weigh less and take up less storage space than other types. However, they can be more costly. Metal is hardwearing, but it weighs more, takes up more space and is expensive.

Hardwood pegs weigh a moderate amount and are more cost-effective. You can use steel cap pegs multiple times, and they can last around 25 years in the ground. Talk to our experts to see what kind of survey peg will best meet your needs.

Steel cap pegs are wooden stakes with a bevelled end for a secure steel collar. Our steel cap pegs have a recessed steel band approximately 10mm from the top of the peg. Generally, concreters use this type of peg for formwork, because they’re durable and can be reused multiple times.

Hardwood pegs are pieces of timber cut to a specific shape and length for easy installation in the ground. They can be used for a variety of purposes including securing timber edging, tree supports, garden beds and more.

Our pegs are extremely durable, made from high-quality Australian hardwood timber and H4 treated for rot-resistance while in the ground. They’re also fully dressed for safe handling.
